In this day and age of digital files, rather than printed images, there is a real danger that all our family memories will sit in drawers around the country, never seeing the light of day.  This in itself breaks my heart, but what’s worse is when my clients lose them altogether.

About four years ago, I photographed the beautiful Carey boys in Hampstead.  A few weeks ago, their mother sent me a message to let me know that they had been burgled and that the images that I took that day were gone, along with many of their other possessions.  Fortunately, I happened to have retrieved my 2009 archive that week from its usual off-site home, so I was able to send the Careys the images once again.  Clare was so grateful, and I was truly delighted that I could help.

Please, I beg of you, if you receive digital files from your wedding or portrait photographer, immediately back them up to a USB or make actual prints from them.  Store them outside of your own home, just in case of fire or theft.  You may have noticed that I didn’t recommend saving them to a dvd or cd – this is because they are proving more and more unreliable, and the disc may not be readable in five years time.

In case you were wondering, these are some of the images from that shoot 🙂

Have a fabulous weekend xxx

I'm always really good with my clients files. I lost pictures of my own children last month and it really hurt.

Oh Simon, I'm so sorry. It's the worst feeling. At some point in my teenager-hood, I lost a contact sheet of 24 pictures of my late mum when she was 6 years old. They were my favourite pictures of her ever, and I lost them :(

So important, thanks for flagging this up. You also make a very good point, we photographers take great care backing up client files, but how many of us have taken the time to do this to our personal photographic memories?

Wise words, Mrs. While digital photography makes life easier in so many ways, storage is a constant worry!

Really good post, we have started to save all our important images onto Cloud after our last break in which we fortunately only lost the images on the video camera. Heartbreaking too as they were of Aidan's first steps. :(

I was thinking of trying to launch a national backup day due to this very thing! I've had a few friends think they have lost images of their children and it's heartbreaking because you can never get those moments back. It is so so so important to backup!
